Top Ranked Hospitals in India (2026): Rankings, Accreditations and a Practical Guide for International Patients

Top Ranked Hospitals in India

Updated November 2026

Medanta – The Medicity in Gurugram is the top ranking hospital in India in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 list, followed by AIIMS Delhi and PGIMER Chandigarh. For international patients, four JCI-accredited Delhi NCR hospitals, Medanta, Max Saket, Indraprastha Apollo and Fortis Memorial Research Institute, also sit in that India top 15.

This guide compares the top ranked hospitals in India on ranking, accreditation, specialities and international patient support, using official sources.

How we assessed the top ranked hospitals in India

No single list settles this question, so we looked at three things together: independent ranking data, accreditation, and what each hospital publishes about its own capacity and services. The starting point was the top hospitals already listed in the Azzocare network. Each hospital’s details were then checked against its official website, company filings where the hospital is listed on a stock exchange, and the 2026 Newsweek and Statista ranking for India.

The Newsweek and Statista list is the most widely cited source, so it helps to know what it measures. Scores combine hospital quality metrics (40%), peer recommendations from medical professionals (30% national, 5% international), patient experience data (18.5%) and a survey on patient-reported outcome measures (6.5%). Newsweek states that scores are comparable only within a country and that specialised hospitals are listed without a rank. A heart institute missing from the table is therefore not necessarily weaker; it may simply sit outside the general-hospital ranking.

Two accreditation terms appear throughout. JCI is Joint Commission International, a US-based body that audits hospitals against international standards. NABH is the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers, part of the Quality Council of India, and NABL accredits laboratories. Neither is a ranking, but both are a sensible minimum check before you shortlist a hospital.

Source: Newsweek, World’s Best Hospitals 2026 – India. In all, 97 Indian hospitals appear in the 2026 ranking, and four of them, Medanta, AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER and CMC Vellore, made the global top 250 (Medical Dialogues).

Two more Azzocare partners appear further down the national list: BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital at No. 42 (64.63%) and Amrita Hospital – Kochi at No. 48, which is a different campus from Amrita Hospital Faridabad.

One pattern is worth noticing. Medanta leads comfortably, but Max Saket, Apollo Delhi and Fortis Memorial Research Institute are separated by less than one point. Between hospitals that close, your condition and the specialist you need will matter more than rank order.

Profiles: Top ranked hospitals in India for international patients

The hospitals below are on the Azzocare network and are either ranked by Newsweek or hold notable accreditations. Bed counts and staffing figures are as published by each hospital or its filings and can change, so treat them as indicative and confirm current numbers when you enquire.

1. Medanta – The Medicity, Gurugram

Location: Sector 38, Gurugram, Haryana. Accreditation: JCI (the hospital cites five consecutive accreditations), NABH and NABL. Scale: 1,440 operational beds including 316 ICU beds, 40 operating theatres and 30+ super specialities on a 43-acre campus that opened in 2009.

Why consider it: Medanta is the highest-ranked hospital in India on Newsweek’s 2026 list and has featured among the world’s best hospitals for seven consecutive years. It is also one of the broadest transplant programmes in the country, with liver, lung, kidney, heart and bone marrow transplant listed as separate specialities. Its website describes CAR-T cell therapy delivered in-house and an on-site Gallium-68 generator that supports PSMA and DOTANOC PET scans. Dr. Naresh Trehan is the group’s chairman and managing director.

International patients: the official site has a dedicated international patients section with a help desk, a trip-planning page, a cost-estimate request form and an insurance partner network.

2. Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi

Location: Press Enclave Road, Saket, New Delhi. Accreditation: JCI (Max’s own timeline records the accreditation in 2017) and NABH. Scale: published bed counts vary between sources, from roughly 500 to 540, across more than 30 specialities.

Why consider it: Max Saket ranks 11th in India on Newsweek’s 2026 list and is a long-established referral centre in south Delhi for cardiac sciences, oncology, neurosciences, orthopaedics and transplants. If you want a major hospital inside Delhi rather than in Gurugram, it is one of the strongest-ranked options on the network.

Before you travel, ask the international desk for the current bed count, the treating team and a written cost estimate.

3. Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Sarita Vihar, New Delhi

Location: Sarita Vihar, Delhi Mathura Road, New Delhi. Accreditation: JCI, NABH and NABL. Scale: about 700 beds and 52 specialities, according to Apollo.

Why consider it: Newsweek places Apollo Hospitals – Delhi 13th in India. Apollo describes it as the first hospital in India to be JCI-accredited, in 2005. It was set up as a public-private partnership between the Government of NCT of Delhi and the Apollo Group, and it opened in 1996. It has a dedicated international patient services page with patient testimonies from overseas patients.

4. Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurugram

Location: Sector 44, Gurugram. Accreditation: JCI and NABH (blood bank, laboratory and nursing excellence also listed). Scale: 330 beds, 15 operating theatres, 107 ICU beds and 24/7 emergency services.

Why consider it: FMRI is Fortis Healthcare’s flagship and ranks 14th on Newsweek’s India list. Its site highlights robotic surgery, more than 600 Gamma Knife procedures (reported in June 2026) and MR Linac Unity, which Fortis announced as North India’s first MRI-guided radiation therapy system. It is more compact than Medanta or Amrita, which some patients prefer. The site offers an international callback request.

5. Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Okhla, New Delhi

Top Ranked Hospitals in India

Location: Okhla Road, New Delhi. Accreditation: the hospital’s official page currently shows NABH accreditation. Scale: 310 beds, 13 operating theatres and 5 cath labs.

Why consider it: this is a heart-first institution. Its own description lists complex angioplasty, TAVR, LVAD and heart transplant among its cardiac services, with separate institutes for liver and digestive diseases, kidney and urology, and bone and joint care. It states that heart, liver and kidney transplants are performed under one roof. It is a specialised centre and does not appear in Newsweek’s general top 50.

6. BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, Pusa Road, New Delhi

BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, Pusa Road, New Delhi

Location: Pusa Road, Rajendra Place, New Delhi. Accreditation: JCI, NABH and NABL, per the hospital. Scale: 650 beds.

Why consider it: BLK-Max ranks 42nd on Newsweek’s India list. The hospital’s own history records a bone marrow transplant team since the 2009 relaunch, followed by kidney, liver and heart transplant firsts, and it describes itself as India’s first private hospital with a dual-console robotic surgical system. For transplant and robotic surgery enquiries it is a credible comparison point against the larger Gurugram hospitals.

7. Artemis Hospital, Gurugram

Artemis Hospital, Gurugram

Location: Sector 51, Gurugram. Accreditation: JCI (first in Gurugram, 2013, per company filings) and NABH. Scale: 700+ beds after its third tower, 500+ full-time doctors, 40+ specialities and 12 centres of excellence.

Why consider it: Artemis was founded in 2007 by the promoters of Apollo Tyres. Its investor presentations note that it was the first hospital in North India to install the M6 CyberKnife (2017). Centres of excellence include cancer, neurosciences, orthopaedics and abdominal organ transplant. The group says it is one of the preferred destinations for international patients.

8. Amrita Hospital, Faridabad

Amrita Hospital, Faridabad

Location: Sector 88, Faridabad, Haryana. Accreditation: NABH, with NABL-accredited laboratories. Scale: up to 2,600 beds at full capacity, 81 specialities and 534 critical care beds on a roughly 130-acre campus.

Why consider it: it is among the largest private hospitals in India and opened in August 2022, with beds being brought into service in phases. A transplant programme began after licensing in December 2022. Because it is newer than most hospitals on this list, ask how many procedures the specific team has performed for your condition.

How to choose among the top ranked hospitals in India

Start with the condition, not the rank. A few examples from the profiles above: if you need a transplant, compare Medanta, Fortis Escorts, BLK-Max and Amrita, which each describe dedicated programmes. For radiation oncology, FMRI’s Gamma Knife and MR Linac and Artemis’s CyberKnife are worth asking about. For cardiac care, Fortis Escorts is a heart-first institute, while Medanta and Apollo run large cardiac programmes alongside many other specialities.

Then verify the basics yourself. JCI publishes a searchable list of accredited organisations at jointcommissioninternational.org, and NABH lists accredited hospitals at nabh.co. Ask for a written cost estimate that states what is included, and send your medical reports for a second opinion before you commit to travel. Azzocare’s second opinion and treatment cost pages explain how this works, and you can book an appointment directly.

Medical visa basics for international patients

Foreign patients from eligible countries generally apply online for an e-Medical Visa. According to Indian missions’ advisories, it is valid for 60 days from arrival in India with triple entry, and up to two e-Medical Attendant visas can be granted alongside it. In some cases the FRRO can extend a medical visa. Rules and eligible countries change, so apply only through the official portal, indianvisaonline.gov.in. See Azzocare’s guides to the India medical visa and visa assistance, or read more on medical travel to India.

Frequently asked questions

Which hospital is ranked No. 1 in India?

In Newsweek and Statista’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 ranking, Medanta – The Medicity in Gurugram is first in India with a score of 90.90%, ahead of AIIMS Delhi (90.29%) and PGIMER Chandigarh (85.96%).

Which are the top ranked hospitals in India for international patients?

There is no official ranking for international patients specifically. Hospitals that combine a high Newsweek rank, JCI accreditation and a dedicated international desk include Medanta, Max Saket, Indraprastha Apollo and Fortis Memorial Research Institute.

Can I compare Newsweek scores between countries?

No. Newsweek states that scores are comparable only within the same country because the underlying data sources differ.

What is the difference between JCI and NABH?

JCI is an international accreditation from a US-based organisation. NABH is India’s national hospital accreditation board. Many leading hospitals hold both.

Is Medanta better than Apollo or Max?

Medanta scores higher on Newsweek’s 2026 list, but the ranking reflects peer recommendations and quality data for the whole hospital, not the outcome of any one treatment. For a specific procedure, compare the treating team’s experience and ask for the cost estimate in writing.

Do I need a medical visa to be treated in India?

Foreign nationals generally need a visa for the purpose of treatment, and the e-Medical Visa is the usual route for eligible nationalities. Confirm eligibility on the official government portal.

How do I shortlist a hospital if my condition is complex?

Send your reports for a second opinion, ask two or three hospitals for written estimates and treatment plans, and compare them. Azzocare can coordinate this across its partner hospitals.

Rankings, bed counts and visa rules change, so recheck before you shortlist any of the top ranked hospitals in India. This article is for general information and is not medical advice; discuss your diagnosis and treatment plan with a qualified doctor.
